The year 2006 marks the 250 th anniversary of the birth
of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, probably the best known
Austrian of all time.
Famous for his innumerable compositions, the musical genius
was feted like an international pop star even in the 18 th century.
During the course of his brief, but extremely productive life,
Mozart composed 626 works, the first at the tender age of 5,
the last on his deathbed. In 2006 Austria will be commemorating
this great musician and his compositions with countless
performances of his best known operas, symphonies, concertos and
chamber music pieces. There will also be special exhibitions and
church masses in Vienna, Baden bei Wien and Salzburg where
many of the highlights of his oeuvre can be heard.
